Clint Eastwood, veterano del Cinema americano e dei suoi eroi, torna ancora una volta sul grande schermo, dopo “American Sniper” (2014) con una storia realmente accaduta: “il miracolo sull’Hudson”.

America, 15 gennaio 2009: il capitano “Sully” Sullenberger (un prevedibilmente bravo Tom Hanks) esperto pilota con quarant’anni di carriera alle spalle e una meritata pensione alle porte, fa decollare il volo US Airways 1549 con 155 anime a bordo; dopo solo due minuti uno stormo di uccelli “alla Hitchcock” provoca un danno irrimediabile ai motori, costringendo il capitano a una scelta azzardata quanto geniale, un ammarraggio sul fiume Hudson. Incredibilmente l’atterraggio ha successo, tutti sopravvissuti, grazie anche alla pronta collaborazione della polizia portuale; Sully è ora un eroe per l’opinione pubblica ma non per la National Transportation Safety Board che sostiene che il capitano non abbia rispettato la procedura standard. Dopo una vita in volo, Sullenberger, sarà giudicato per soli 208 secondi.

Non importa che sia appena iniziato il 2009 e che l’unica buona notizia sia l’uscita del film di Eastwood “Gran Torino” (da notare il cameo del regista sul maxi schermo mentre un preoccupato Sully “Forrest” corre per New York), per la burocrazia americana non importa che il capitano Sullenberger abbia salvato tutti, importa solo che non abbia rispettato il manuale.

E’ un’America in crisi quella presentata da Eastwood in questa pellicola, un’America amata dal regista e dal popolo ma che ha fame di cambiamento e sviluppo e per la quale l’ammarraggio di “Sully” è un segno di speranza. Non c’è nulla di divino su un atterraggio sull’acqua, come si potrebbe invece pensare, c’è però qualcosa di eroico e, soprattutto, di umano.

Sono la saggezza (del capitano/regista) e la collaborazione (degli assistenti di volo, dei soccorsi/del cast e dei tecnici) che garantiscono il risultato. Nonostante una trama quasi inesistente e qualche cliché (i dialoghi, specialmente tra moglie e marito), il film è visivamente forte e tiene lo spettatore in tensione fino alla fine, regalando un sorriso e un’ironica consapevolezza: Eastwood è un grande regista ma, prima di tutto, è un vero americano.

Clint Eastwood, veteran of american Cinema and its heroes, comes once again back on the screen after “American Sniper” (2014) with a true story: “ the Hudson miracle”.

America, 15th January 2009: captain “Sully” Sullenberger (a predictable good at -Tom Hanks) a forty-years career expert pilot in proximity  of a earned ritire, takes  the US Airways 1549 flight off with 155 people on board. It takes only two minutes to a storm of “Hitchcock” birds to made an irreparable damage to the engine. This forces the captain to take a risky but brilliant choice – a splashdown on the Hudson river. Incredibly it has been a success and everybody is safe, also thanks to the Coast Guard. So Sully is now a hero, but not for the National Transportation Safety Board which says that the captain had not acted according to standard procedure. After having spent all his life on board, Sullenberger, will be judged for 208 seconds.

It doesn’t matter that 2009 has just begun and that the only good news is Clint Eastwood’s “Gran Torino” soon on the screen ( to be noticed the director’s  cameo on the screen while a worried Sully “Forrest” is running around New York), to the american bureaucracy it doesn’t matter if captain Sully saved the entire flight, the only thing that counts is that he did not respect the operating manual.

With this movie Eastwood makes a portrait of a country in crisis, a beloved America which really needs to change and develop, and to which Sully’s splashdown gave hope. Because there’s nothing blissful in a splashdow but it’s heroic and, above all, human.

The success is the result of wisdom (captain’s/director’s) and cooperation (flight attendants’/ rescuers’ / cast’s and technicians’). In spite of a quite lacking plot and some clichè (dialogues, especially wife-husband) the movie is strong and creates tension in the audience until the end. It also gives a smile and an ironic awarness: Easwood is a great director but, first of all, he is a real american.
